The pandemic brought the construction industry to a halt, and those who make space — architects, designers, general contractors, real estate leaders, and facilities executives — were forced to run a gauntlet of unrelenting challenges in a world where information was deeply siloed and fragmented. In order to unlock insight and share thought leadership and information across disciplines, DIRTT created an editorial platform and campaign to empower people with ideas and insight to be resilient and agile so they can flourish in times of change.

In November of 2020, DIRTT launched Make Space for Possibilities™ (make.space), which sought to capture and share design and construction insight from the industry’s most provocative thinkers. Its purpose was not to be a website to promote products or companies, but instead a content platform to share ideas and insight from the wider design and construction ecosystem.

Since its inception, make.space has grown into a cross-industry publication that has reached hundreds of thousands of readers, with articles being shared regularly on social media. Leaders and executives from leading construction, design, and technology firms have participated, including Gensler, Autodesk, Microsoft, JLL, BCG, Cushman & Wakefield, Turner Construction, Perkins&Will, Mortenson, the International Interior Design Association, the American Institute of Architects, and more.

The platform has shared insight and stories from more than 75 industrialized construction leaders across all segments and key markets in 18 months. Functioning more like a media publication rather than a brand portal, make.space has been recognized as an approved Google News source; its staff has been invited to industry events to cover trends as accredited media; and attendees regularly approach DIRTT at events using make.space as the discussion point.

Lastly, its story-driven approach has yielded bespoke thought leadership, new strategic relationships with people who advocate on DIRTT’s behalf, and a ground swell of content that has been shared across digital and social media channels.
