Matriclysm: An Archaeology of Connections Lost

This film explores the creative process behind the artist Jewel’s Matriclysm: An Archeology of Connection Lost installation, which will run concurrently with the 2026 Venice Biennale.
Like the exhibition, the film seeks to discover why humans have lost their connection with nature. Through her immersive, almost sentient, artwork, Jewel reveals much about her vulnerability, exploring her experience as a woman in the world. The works — produced in collaboration with organizations such as NASA, NOAA and SCAD— are meditative, replete with soundscapes, light wave radiations, sculptures, and paintings. The work is an attempt to bring humans back into a relationship with nature and with each other in a meaningful way.
As a part of this unique collaboration, a group of promising filmmakers gained valuable real-world work experience. Led by Jewel, the SCAD Studios creative team of editor Raenise Nugent and fellow SCAD B.F.A., film and television students Jazmin Leon, Nasiir Mayers and Matt Davis made vital contributions toward shaping the story.
