The Golden Rural Villages Gift Box is a sustainable packaging system created for three award-winning rural communities in Hsinchu County, Taiwan. Rather than developing separate packages for each community, the project is built around a shared gift box structure that establishes a unified county-level brand identity, while allowing local cultures to be expressed through modular sleeves and visual elements. A key visual feature of the box is its bilingual and bicultural typography. The front and back of the package prominently display the name of Hsinchu County in Hakka Romanization and English, transforming language into a visual statement. This design decision reflects Hsinchu’s identity as a Hakka cultural region, while ensuring international legibility. By placing local language and global language side by side, the packaging communicates cultural pride without limiting accessibility. The shared system addresses a common challenge faced by rural communities: limited resources for packaging development and fragmented brand recognition. By consolidating structure and production, the design reduces redundant tooling and manufacturing costs, while forming a scalable and replicable framework that can be extended to additional communities in the future. Sustainability is embedded at both material and systemic levels. The gift box is made entirely from bagasse paper, produced from recycled sugarcane residue, reducing dependence on virgin wood pulp and promoting the circular reuse of agricultural by-products. Printing is completed using soy-based ink to further lower environmental impact and improve recyclability. While the box structure remains consistent, each community communicates its identity through interchangeable sleeves, circular labels, and graphic narratives inspired by local culture, landscape, and language. The result is a packaging system that functions as both a shared regional symbol and a cultural storytelling platform—supporting sustainable production while reinforcing rural identity and long-term regional development.
