The Mayo Clinic Alumni Magazine is a quarterly publication connecting more than 37,000 Mayo Clinic alumni across 83 countries. Each issue celebrates the institution’s dedication to advancing patient care through innovation, education, and collaboration.
Issue 4 of the Alumni magazine celebrates pivotal Mayo Clinic milestones that helped shape modern medicine, highlighting three major anniversaries: 100 years of a premier peer-reviewed clinical journal, 100 years of rheumatology service, and 50 years of smoking cessation treatment, research, and advocacy.
McGuffin Creative Group developed a cohesive visual package across the cover and main-story openers, providing the issue a unified style while allowing each feature to stand apart with its own creative identity. The cover sets the tone with a bespoke photo of a custom client-branded celebratory cake - a visual metaphor for legacy and achievement.
Leveraging archival imagery, journal artifacts, and editorial photos, a visually driven timeline conveys the story of how an internal publication evolved into a globally influential medical journal. Inspired by our cover and a primary article “Clearing the Smoke,” pairs its story of long-term advocacy with an original photoshoot nodding to a mid-century ad aesthetic—anchored by a bold image of a hand snuffing out a cigarette, symbolizing progress and resolve. Rounding out our feature stories, “Searching for Substance X” frames rheumatology’s breakthrough history as a medical mystery—using a Sherlock Holmes-inspired evidence-board opener and vintage-style illustrated portraits to underscore discovery through connection.
Printed in an oversized 12.5 x 9 format on uncoated Accent Opaque stock with vibrant UV inks, the magazine’s tactile depth reinforces its premium feel. Through storytelling and design, Issue 4, 2025 honors Mayo Clinic’s legacy of breakthroughs while celebrating the programs and people who continue to move modern medicine forward.
