Rare Connections in gMG is a short form documentary film that takes a unique storytelling approach to explore the personal journeys of people living with generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG), a rare, chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes severe muscle weakness and extreme fatigue. Defined by its unpredictability, gMG is often misunderstood because its impact is not always visible. This project was created to reflect the reality of life with gMG and to honor the power of being truly seen, heard and understood.
Rare Connections in gMG follows Marta, Nick and Deanna, who invite viewers into their lives through personal journal entries written to loved ones. Their stories highlight the unpredictable, often invisible nature of gMG and the strength required to navigate a condition that is frequently misunderstood. By conveying the impact of fluctuating symptoms on their physical, emotional and social well‑being, they offer a window into the determination and quiet courage of living with a chronic rare disease.
At its heart, Rare Connections in gMG is about connection: between individuals and their loved ones, within the gMG community and across a broader audience that may never have encountered the condition before. By elevating lived experience, the film raises awareness of this debilitating rare disease and sheds light on the burdens of gMG for those diagnosed and the families, friends and caregivers who support them. It underscores the seriousness and uncertainty of gMG symptoms, while also reinforcing the importance of early diagnosis and ongoing symptom management.
Following its June 2025 premiere in recognition of Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month, Rare Connections in gMG is now available to stream on the Alexion global YouTube channel.
