About The Entry
Working on the Sleep Awake release date trailer was a joy for all of us at Layer because it gave us a chance to lean into something truly surreal. The central theme - a mind that’s caught between dreaming and wakefulness - demanded an approach that felt disorienting, curious, and emotionally resonant, and every creative choice we made was in service of that.
From the first cut, the editing was crafted to mimic the ebb and flow of a sleepless mind. Transitions aren’t always smooth; they’re intentionally jarring at times, pulling you into shifts in perception and keeping you slightly off‑balance - just like the game itself. That rhythm was crucial in reinforcing the trailer’s core mood.
The voiceover was another key piece of the puzzle. Our goal was to give the narration a tone that feels introspective and slightly unmoored, like thoughts drifting in and out of clarity. Paired with the visuals - layered textures, glowing environments, and unsettling, dream‑like imagery - it all works together to immerse the viewer in that in‑between state.
Visually, we played with contrast, lighting shifts, and unexpected compositions to give a sense of slipping in and out of reality. Add in atmospheric sound design, and the trailer becomes more than just an announcement - it feels like a teaser of the experience itself.
We’re proud of how well it conveys that liminal space between consciousness and sleep, and we hope players feel that same strange pull when they watch it.
