When schools closed in 2020, millions of students lost their only access to computer science education. For many, it was a gap no one was coming to fill. TechSpaces Education was launched in response to this challenge as a global initiative focused on expanding equitable access to STEM, coding, and AI education.
The campaign strategy centered on removing barriers to entry by delivering free, beginner-friendly programming education at scale. TechSpaces combined live instruction, recorded content, and open-access curriculum to ensure accessibility regardless of geographic or socioeconomic constraints. Early efforts focused on local outreach through organizations such as the Tompkins County Public Library through virtual programming during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Execution emphasized accessibility, consistency, and community-driven growth. A global network of over 300 volunteers was built to deliver instruction, mentor students, and develop curriculum-collectively contributing thousands of hours of teaching across hundreds of sessions worldwide. This peer-led model enabled sustainable scaling, extending the program’s reach across new regions.
To support this growth, TechSpaces secured over $10,000 per month in operational support, primarily through sponsorship including technology credits, software tools, and infrastructure from partners including Google (Ad Grants), Adobe, Zoom, Microsoft and more. These partnerships not only enabled large-scale delivery, but also signaled strong validation from leading organizations in the technology sector.
Most recently, TechSpaces became an official Code.org Hour of AI partner, bringing AI literacy programming to students across more than 130 countries and significantly expanding global awareness and access to foundational AI education.
The campaign has achieved significant global impact. TechSpaces has reached over 350,000 learners worldwide through structured programs, workshops, and global initiatives. Beyond scale, the program emphasizes measurable outcomes: over 70% of first-time learners complete independent coding projects, with many continuing into advanced learning or returning as peer mentors - transforming from first-time learners into creators and educators.
By combining accessible education, volunteer-driven delivery, and scalable digital infrastructure, TechSpaces demonstrates how a student-led initiative can address systemic gaps in technology access. More importantly, it shows what happens when opportunity is made real: students who once believed they did not belong in technology begin to build, create, and lead.
