They say less is more. Here’s proof: Measuring roughly 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches and weighing in at only 50 pages, Cleveland Clinic’s Little Book of Big Impact won’t be used as a doorstop anytime soon. But what it lacks in physical size or heft, this diminutive publication — created annually by the international health system’s Philanthropy Institute — more than makes up for with succinctly substantive content. For the 2022 edition, the theme was “Mission: Possible.” In a couple of hundred words or fewer, vivid vignettes told donors how their generosity is saving lives and changing lives at Cleveland Clinic. They learned about groundbreaking research, seeded with philanthropy, to develop vaccines that could prevent adult-onset cancers. They got up to speed on donor-supported studies to investigate the benefits of long-term, high-intensity aerobic exercise for patients with Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease. And they went inside a fetal surgery/care center, where philanthropy makes possible seemingly impossible miracles such as the complex surgical removal of a malignant tumor that was compressing the heart of a 26-week-old fetus. The latest Little Book of Big Impact also provided an overview of Cleveland Clinic’s current fundraising priorities. Throughout the booklet, tight and bright text was accompanied by simple yet effective photos and illustrations. Handsomely packaged and mailed with a quick note from Philanthropy Institute Chair Lara Kalafatis, the end result amounted to a pocket-size case for support, as compelling as it was concise.
