The "Pingtung Awards," initially known as the "Pingtung Fine Arts Exhibition" since 2002, serves as an extensive annual competition designed to foster experimentation and innovation across various artistic genres. With the intention of rebranding the awards' identity, our objective is to design distinct typefaces for the Pingtung Awards featured on each annual poster. This initiative aims to cultivate a collection of exclusive poster art pieces over the next decade.
The type design concept embodies the notion that every artistic endeavor originates from initial sketches. Hence, the three terms representing the Pingtung Awards in traditional Chinese are delineated with strategic lines, symbolizing the genesis of multifaceted art expressions.
The categories of submissions defines colors: echoing the first category with "oriental ink painting" green and "seal carving" red, and also corresponding to the second category with the RGB colors of screens in new media and the three primary colors of light in photography.
Typeface posters of Pingtung Awards play a crucial role in building and reinforcing brand identity. Its clarity and readability ensure that the name of the brand is easily readable, even from a distance, to effectively convey the key message. Most importantly, the design incorporated sustainability that the poster is not disposable but collectable. The goal is to create typeface designs for Pingtung Awards for each annual poster, developing it into a series of collectible poster arts in the coming decade.
The design is rooted in seriality and sustainability. Without a long-term vision for the awards, the design direction fluctuates annually, failing to leave a lasting impression. Embracing a serial approach enables the cultivation of a distinctive style unparalleled by any other event.
In 2021, there were a total of 554 entries for the Pingtung Awards. The first category encompassed 210 works, including ink painting, calligraphy, gouache, seal carving, and others. The second category included 334 works, comprising photography, visual design, new media, and more. The winning entries consisted of young and emerging artists, new immigrants, as well as creators over the age of seventy, fully demonstrating the diverse possibilities of artistic creation.
